Our precious metals

The gold that makes the difference

At AGUAdeORO, transparency is our fundamental principle. We say no to traditional gold that is not subject to rigorous traceability controls. We use Fairtrade gold that is controlled and labeled by an independent foundation. AGUAdeORO regularly undergoes audits to uphold this commitment.

Why?

Because gold from mines that do not apply strict regulations kills. Because it has no regard for either humanity or our planet. AGUAdeORO takes pride in using traceable and controlled gold, from the mine to our workshops.

Many concerning issues are related to the extraction of metals used in jewelry. On one hand, gold extraction leads to numerous societal problems: illegal practices, money laundering, child exploitation, and funding of conflicts. Despite the media coverage of these issues, few substantial changes will occur as long as companies and individuals do not pay rigorous attention to the origin of the gold they purchase, or turn to illusory responsible alternatives such as recycled gold.

On the other hand, this activity leads to a blatant disregard for nature, resulting in deforestation and the use of harmful substances, such as cyanide and mercury. The latter, often used to extract and refine gold, poses a serious threat to the environment, as well as to the health of miners and their communities. Approximately 50% of the gold that circulates in the world is used for jewelry, while about 40% is held as monetary reserves by central banks and governments (World Gold Trade Council, GDT 2023). The remainder is used in industrial applications, including electronics and medicine. This means that a relatively small portion of gold is constantly traded on the market, contributing to the complexity of its traceability. While a large part of the world's gold remains untraceable, at AGUAdeORO, we firmly oppose this trend by creating our jewelry exclusively with Fairtrade gold.

Recycled Gold: this illusory alternative

Recycled gold, often presented as an ethical option, actually hides major challenges. A large portion of this gold comes from untraceable sources, such as smuggling or illegal mining, making its origin impossible to verify once melted down. Working conditions in recycling facilities are often precarious, and certification systems do not guarantee complete traceability, leaving room for numerous frauds. Additionally, the recycling process can cause environmental damage through the use of harmful chemicals. Despite promises of sustainability, recycled gold is often a case of greenwashing. For a true advancement in luxury jewelry, total transparency and rigorous control of the production chain are essential.

The benefits of Fairtrade gold by Max Havelaar

Fairtrade Max Havelaar gold comes from small mines that strictly adhere to the Fairtrade Gold Standard. These standards ensure a fair price for gold, along with a premium, allowing mining communities to live with dignity and develop. Additionally, they ensure compliance with equipment and safety policies. Harmful substances such as mercury and cyanide, traditionally used in gold extraction, are strictly controlled. The mines and various links in the supply chain, where Fairtrade gold is processed, are subject to regular audits to ensure compliance with established regulations.

Fairtrade Gold and its challenges

The regulations imposed on Fairtrade gold are not without environmental impacts in the affected areas. However, the Fairtrade label applies strict guidelines aimed at limiting the environmental impact of gold extraction. The use of chemicals is carefully controlled and reduced through regular audits. Water consumption is also monitored to minimize the water footprint, and soil refertilization measures are implemented after mining. Furthermore, a portion of the Fairtrade premiums is invested in ecological initiatives, such as reforestation, wildlife conservation, and the promotion of sustainable agriculture. Max Havelaar, as a fair trade label, acts as a neutral intermediary, ensuring ethical practices without being influenced by financial interests or stock market speculation.
